LKAB's mines and refining plants are located in Malmfälten in the north of Sweden. Our production operations are principally located in Kiruna, Malmberget and Svappavaara.
Our products are transported on the Ore Railway and the Ofoten Railway to the ports of Narvik and Luleå for shipment to customers all around the world.
We have a sales organisation for the iron ore markets in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The industrial minerals business has sales offices and production facilities in Europe, the USA and Asia.
Global supplier
From an overall perspective, LKAB is a small player on the global iron ore market. On the seaborne import market for iron ore pellets, however, we are the world's second-largest supplier.
The import markets for iron ore principally comprise Asia, Europe, as well as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Europe and MENA are our largest markets.
Europe is our home market
On Europe's mature steel market, the focus lies on rationalisation and consolidation. The steel producers demand high-quality iron ore products that enable them to produce as much or more steel in fewer production units. This makes LKAB's pellets a much sought-after raw material in our customers' production processes. Our proximity to Europe gives us an advantage as regards freight in relation to our competitors and makes Europe a natural home market. We have been cultivating good, long-term business relations here for more than 125 years.
In MENA, good access to natural gas and a shortage of high-quality scrap means that steel manufactured from direct reduction pellets is the most common production method. Strong demand for our DR pellets for direct reduction, alongside freight neutrality, makes MENA our second-largest market.
